I'm thinking of one of these two amps for my Vandersteen 3A's. I doubt anyone has heard BOTH of these, but let me say I'm concerned about keeping the high frequencies mellow, as my ears are very sensitive to them. Also, which of these accepts banana plugs?
Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.
Follow Ups:
The Portal Panache certainly has mellow highs, and accepts bananas. It is warm and smooth and non-fatiguing, but possibly lacking that nth degree of detail . They were made to handle difficult loads, and should drive your Vandersteens easily. You can usually get a Demo from the dealer cheaper than new. They have a 60 day trial period if you decide you don't like it.
enjoy,
Jack
I didn't notice any lack of detail in my system with my Panache, and none of the reviews mentioned a lack of detail - in fact retrieval of detail was listed as one of the Panache's strong points. The Panache comes with a built-in passive preamp, and passive preamps are renowned for their razor sharp clarity and their ability to retrieve detail, so if you're noticing even a small lack of detail with your Panache in your system then you may want to double check your other components - cabling, source, speakers, etc. - to make sure that they're up to the task of partnering with a high-end piece like the Panache.
I've had the Panache and used it exclusively for 2 years with all kinds of music. I now have a Cayin 265Ai. The Cayin retrieves more detail than the Panache. On good recordings, It's easily noticeable. Nothing else was changed in my system but the integrated amplifier. I don't wish to knock the Portal amplifier, it's a great amplifier with many virtues that the Cayin can't match but detail retrieval is not its strong point. It's not weak in that area, it's average amongst it's competition. One's thing for sure, you will never find this amp fatiguing. If your system sounds bright with the Portal Panache, look elsewhere cause it's not the amplifier.
I owned a Panache and for SS it's a great sounding amp with realistic and accurate highs, and in fact the highs are one of it's strong points, and it also comes with a world class headphone out. Highly recommended. If you want to buy used you should be able to find one in mint condition for about half of what they sell for new.
I've had the Portal Panache myself. It's definitely on the warm side of neutral, never fatiguing. The highs are mellow for sure. Deep and wide soundstage too. It accepts bananas.Never heard the Jungson.
Jungson is losing its distributor in the US. The current distributor has had problems with warranty service.
This from my best friend who has a Jungson SACD/cd player.
I think you can do much better than either.
