I can got a very deal on a set of Audio Research SP16L and D150.2 from my local ARC dealer.I have an ARC SP-5 and D-100 at the moment that I like very much.
Question is how much would I gain, and where, in buying the new set?
I use von Schweikert VR-4 speakers.

Thanks for your suggestions and information. I'll check if I can get a good deal on the LS17. It looks more like a 'real' ARC preamp, too...
The LS26 is truly amazing. It is the next ARC preamp step up from the LS17. Well worth the extra dollars spent. Please email me if you need the name of an outstanding authorized dealer who might be able to provide timely response, a great deal as well as followup.
having recently listened to the 17, 26 and Ref3. IMHO the 26 is worth the 50% upcharge over the 17 and while the Ref 3 is the best of the lot it is not worth the almost 50% upcharge over the 26 at least IMHO. The best bang for the buck is in fact the 26.
Go for the power amp..but see what kind of deal you can get with the LS-17 pre instead of the SP16L as well.
You'd gain A LOT. I worked for an ARC dealer in Mpls in 1979. It's true, that stuff almost put the company out of business, and for a reason.
Which dealer was it in 1979 - The Sound Environment in Butler Square or had they already closed?
Oops, 1977, not 79. And yes, the Snob Environment, as it was known locally. We had Magnepan for awhile.
.
Were they a Maggie dealer as well?
Bill Johnson told Harry Pearson of TAS that the unfavorable reviews of the SP-4 (fully featured version of the SP-5) and the D-100 almost put the company under back in the 70s. They took the criticism to heart in the many years that followed. It's been a long time since I've heard that combo, but neither was as good as the SP-3a / D-76a.BTW, I have been an ARC fan since the 80s and still have one of their preamps.
