I need your help from McIntosh users. Regarding power amps such as MC202, 252, or 352, do they run relatively hot? Are they MOS-FET or Bipolar design? Class A or Class A/B? Many thanks in advance.
Follow Ups:
My MC402 runs cooler than the little light bulb in our pantry closet.
I have an MC252 and it runs extremely cool. So cool in fact that I would not worry about putting an LP on top of it for a few minutes.I also have a vintage MC250 and it also runs super cool.
Bottom line: MacIntosh SS amps RUN COOL, but SOUND WARM.
BTW, since I discovered McIntosh I've stopped looking around and upgrading. I found my sound. Good luck in your search.
They're bipolar and class A/B. Recent Autoformer and direct-coupled models all run cool relative to most competitive amplifiers. (Someone else would be better able to speak on this subject concerning pre-1990 or so models.) You have to push McIntosh amps very hard to make them become moderately warm. I've personally never felt one become hot to the touch, and I've checked several times out of curiosity, including the MC202 and monster MC352 that you mentioned.
I own an MC7200. I believe build years were '87-93 or somewhere around there - I'm not sure of the build year of mine. But even after a couple of hours of higher volumes while friends are over hanging out on the screend porch, the vented chassis above the enclosed heat sinks is only warm to the touch. It has been a pleasure to have in my family room for the past 3 years...
Thanks for your help!
I have MC202 doesn't matter how hard I push the amp stay cool not even warm because it uses Autoformer to monitor the outputs. I have no idea which trans. they used or class A or AB but it's a fine amp for sure. Cheers.
