I bought one from Amazon last fall and it replaced a Pass Aleph 3 I'd owned for several years. I wanted remote, and more power and I got it.
With my Aegis 3 speakers, NAD 531i cd player, and hd-14 speaker cables and Heartland Belden interconnects, the sound is open, transparent, and the bass is huge-im-endous. I'm thinking it's as transparent as the Pass, or maybe I just imagine it is.Musically, it does make my feet tap, so I feel it does do rhythm....
The phono stage is just ok, not as good as my Odyssey Tempest, but I'm losing the Tempest becuase I just want a stripped down system with the 9555 only. Since my listening is 70 percent CD and 30 percent vinyl, having a great phono stage is not at the top of the priority list at this time - but maybe in the future.
I really love using a remote now. No getting up from my chair to change volume, mute, etc....
The 9555 also runs dead quiet. No hum no hiss no hassle.... And it has a blue light, like the Pass....

I wouldn't doubt that the Onkyo is more transparent than the Pass Aleph 3. I had the Aleph 3 and 30. If you are hearing more transparency in the Onkyo, you're probably right. While these class A Pass amps are wonderful, I have also found others that are even more transparent and robust sounding. I may try that Onkyo amp someday.
Does this have a pre-out to run a sub with?
Thanks, newzguy53, for your comment. I wish that there were a dealer that would be willing to bring it in for me to listen. The problem is that all the dealers that I've contacted want to sell me something else - Rotel, Arcam, Cambridge Audio...you name it. I'm sure that these are good amps, but it's frustrating not to have a chance to compare them.
