I can hear a slight hiss through my speakers from about two feet away. It's not dependant on the volume or the source. It does not detract from the music, but bothers me because I know it's there. My Creek 5350Se was dead quiet. I'm using balanced connections with the parasound and would have thought it would be at least as quiet as the Creek. Are the Parasound electronics just noisier? I am also not getting the output from the A23 that I got from the Creek even though it is 125W vs the Creek's 85 watts.I'm also looking for some advice on an upgrade path for my whole system. The reason I went with the Halo components was to get flexibility for future upgrades. What is my weakest link?
My system:
Vandersteen 2Ce sign.
Vandersteen 2Wq sub
Nottingham Spacedeck w/ space arm
Grado Platinum cart.
Sony DVPS-9000ES Level 2 VSE mod
Halo A23 amp
Halo P3 pre
audioquest speaker wire and interconnects
Follow Ups:
If you want to assess when the noise start you can solder a resistance of some hundreds of ohms on a rca plug, well two of them.
Then put these on your power amp input, switch it on and listen for noise from the speakers.
Then connect the preamp and place the shorting RCA plugs at the input preamp.
In this way I found that my ground loop noise was caused by the source, a dvd player connected also to the TV.Kind regards,
beppe
I have long found Parasound products have a hiss. I tried the PH850 preamp and hca1000 poweramp in my system and both produced a slight but noticable hiss thru the speakers I was using at the time. I thought it was a grounding problem and tried a cheater plug. I was never able to resolve the hiss. The hiss did not seem to affect the sound quality, but it was enough of an issue for me to return the equipment. On paper, your system doesn't seem to have any weak links, but this depends on your room and program material.
What do you think is lacking?
It is probably the preamps. (I did not design them so please don't blame me.)
IF your A23 power amp has input pots, you might try to turn then down a bit. One problem that we have, today, is that we HAVE to meet THX specs and that means extra high gain in the power amp. This tends to amplify the noise in the preamp stage.
John,
I will try to turn down the gain on the A23. As I said in my original post the hiss doesn't effect the music. It's only noticeable when there is no source input. I'm going to try the passive pre section of the Creek into the A23 and see if it makes a difference.
Thanks for responding. Parasound is still the best value out there!
