Hi.I currently have a pair of Verity Audio Fidelio and am running off Jadis JA30s(6550/KT88 push pull).
I am wondering if these speakers can be driven by 300B single ended amplifiers efficiently. I know push pulls yield more power, but really like to try single ended to enjoy mid range harmonics.
Thanks.

I was considering this Allnic's 300B SE amplifiers. Allnic is a south Korean company and its amplifiers are designed by the person who designed Silvaweld amplifiers. He claimed that the low efficiency of 300B SE amplifiers was due to the poor circuitry design, and that he solved the problem by using interstage transformer. Please refer to the following link.

What do you think? Do you still think 300B SE cannot drive my Fidelio? I am so curious because the designer of this amplifier was very positive.
I'm just a novice, but that seems odd. The 8 watts output of a single-ended triode amp based on the 300B valve is a limitation of the valve itself. How could one get more power?

Geoff
Geoff,Gordon Rankin of Wavelength has a couple of posts in SET about the possibility of getting more power out of a 300B, as much as 18 watts within the spec's of the WE300B. He doesn't say it's desirable necessarily, but possible. I believe he has a current production amp using the WE that puts out 12.5 watts. If I had $7500 it would definitely be on my short list.
Incidentally to Brian the OP, I run my Avalon Symbols (87db, benign impedance) using an older Wavelength 300B integrated. I love the way it sounds, I listen to big symphonies and jazz, though not at ear shattering levels and I do have a small room. And no, I don't listen to solo flute or "little girl with guitar" music either. I find when I go back to my Sonic Frontiers 50 watt PP amp I lose a tremendous amount of the music while gaining a little more volume, which matters little to me in my listening room. Now if I had a bigger room I'd certainly be looking at higher efficiency speakers to capture more of what I hear now with my less than ideal setup. No pun intended.
YMMV, yadda yadda yadda.

No but a 20 or 30 watt SET will likely be sufficient and if you buy a good one (KR audio, New Audio Frontiers, DeHavilland etc.) will likely sound much better than the Jadis.
I do play at live levels and do have a large room, but I cannot imagine you or your amp being very happy.
........and even then U may run out of power!Even if the Fidelo's remain above 8 ohms across the entire audio band, a 300B SE amp will be a VERY poor match as best.
As Snert says, U will need at the very least, 94db speakers but I need to add that even at that minimum, U need to ensure the impedence does not dip below 6-8 ohms.
Believe me, I have been down this avenue and tried to power a pair of Alon 1's that are 89db with a 300B SE amp and the match was completely horrid.
Even with a pair of Cabasse Ferrella 401's which are 94db/4 ohms, I had to bring in an electronic X-over at 80hz/18db slope to keep the 300B SE amp from clipping on moderate material. After adding a sub to fill in the bottom though, it was pure musical heaven :-)
Cheers,

I tried a few different speakers of that efficiency and it did not work well. I would suggest at least 94db speakers. Just MHO
I have heard the Push Pull 300b amps and think they are very pretty sounding. You are correct in that they don't have the sheer clarity of the SET but you really can't use an SET amp, as the others have already said, with just any speaker. You have much more flexibility with the Push Pull there is no question that the charcter of the 300b is heard and IMHO they are a decent compromise. To get good music from an SET the speaker has to voiced with an SET, frequently using single drivers.
I would suggest you look at Lamm Horns and other Single driver speakers. Omegas are a less expensive alternative. The Lamm horn compensates for the low voltage signal by using a very powerful single driver, the German AER. The AER magnet motor assembly is massive. It's not a horn in the traditional sense the driver is flush mouted face forward on the baffle. The horn element is only for bass from the back motion of the driver it is elaborate and has a very large port. The sound using a 211 SET is absolutely magnificent. I have not heard that speaker with a 300B but I would imagine it would work very well, you might want to try it. Admittedly the 211 is a transmitter tube with about twice the plate dissipation of a 300b.
..it would sound just driving the high end in a triamped setup? (Magnepan 2.7 speaker.)
I had a friend with Maggies for years and he finally gave up the addiction. The reason was that he loved the sound of tube amps but they are of course a problem with maggies. He didn't attempt to bi or tri amp. I don't know if the big mid panel would work I think the impedance and pull from the amp would sound very distorted using an SET. Big ribbons can blow a tube apart as well depending on where they cross over. I therefore suggest you not use a tube amp unless you only play very low volumes . That said if you get a massive tube amp it will work he had a 200wpc tube set up which did drive the maggies but I like the 400wpc SS better. I bought his. He also went for conventional cone speakers eventually.
