In Reply to: That 10K-Ohm output impedance sounds about 10 times too high. What is it? posted by jeffreybehr on April 5, 2007 at 23:47:02:

will you have to kill us? Is it top secret? Why is it such a problem to state which piece of equipment we are talking about? Most of the VTL's I know have few hundred ohms output impedance, max.
Don't know what purpose would 10K output serve.
Deluxe Pre amp from early 90's. Vtl Book Says 10 k ohm. Is this a miss print ?
Saw your other post with scan.Obiously from the manual, it is very "unique" output.
It seems that it is intended to be used with specific VTL amp or thru filter for mid/high amp in biamp tube system.
It does not seem that it will work at all in to a regular transistor amp.
Even with tubed ones I would not mess around unless I relly know what would happen to either preamp or amp if there is mismatch.
I have to say I havent seen something like that. I am not aware that new VTL have this feaure.
IMHO, if it would have been usefull they would have kept it, stay with low impedance output.
But I have never hear of the preamp that has OUTPUT impedance of 10 k ohms. Can you scan and post it (or, or if you can't post it, e-mail it to those of us who responded)
It is a) either typo, though 10 ohms looks low for the tubed pre, or
b) you are reading wrong data or
c) that is really weird preamp
Tech folks have quoted to me that the input impedance of the receiving component should be 10x higher than the output impedance of the source component otherwise the sound will be dulled and lifeless. A variation from 300 to 10K will cause the sound to be tilted up towards whatever frequency has the lowest impedance.
