I received my filarmonia yesterday. Although it is still in the early break in stages, it is definitely a very special piece. The only issue is that there is an audible transformer buzz, even from my listening position - about ten feet from the amplifier. Is this a normal phenomenon for a new unit that will go away with break in?
Follow Ups:
It's normal that at first, until the transformer's core plates get settled and the sorrounding isolation lacquer (the reason for a so special burn-in period) gets uniformly spread in between them, some buzz is present. It should disappear or get way lower with further use.
Other possible reason of buzzing is the presence of some DC in your power line. Check if it's the PS (the center big one) transformer buzzing. Measure your mains voltage with a tester in DC mode. In case you have some DC, this could be also a factor. If you measure no DC in your power line and the buzz doesn't get way quieter after about 100 hours of use or increases, have the unit checked, it might have received some damage during shipping.
I have it plugged into a b-p-t 2.5. It should be relatively clean, power-wise. I'll reassess it after break-in.
allow the unit to break in. aj kindly explained about the tranformer plates and the lacquer damping the transformer windings with time. the dc potential is to be considered so i would certainly have it checked as he suggested and i would plug the unit to the wall to see if the conditioner is causing an issue. make no assumptions here!!
i told you the same thing when you e-mailed me yesterday. just give it time to play in.
the cryoed caps need time to settle in, at least 100 hours and the lead free power cord the same thing.
if you have any issue after a fair breakin time, please call me.
