I got 20 years old amplifier. What are symptoms and signs of capacitors gone bad? Many thanks in advance.
Follow Ups:
Low frequency 60hz (in north america) hum, and or capacitor getting warm, not including possible ambient heat from a nearby heatsink. Typically as a cap ages it will dry up and its esr will go up along with decreased capacitance. AT 20 years I would replace them anyways as part of regular maintainance, by doing so you will bring back the life it would have had brand new.
Specifically, whether its tubed or solid state but its preferable to provide a full brand and model number. It does make a difference. In general, however, 15-20 years for most any amp is a good point to think about some updates - again depending on the quality of build, brand and model.
Cheers,
Hello David:
I got Yamaha M-2(Solid State) that I acquired back in 1988. Also I have Yamaha MX-1 (Solid State).
