I have owned a lot of pre amps but I have to say this Placette passive Pre is simply the best yet. If you can go passive then you should try Placette. At a retail of $1595 it even comes with a remote control which I must say now that I have it, I am to spoiled to go without it again. The Placette replaced my Audible Illusion M3A tube/solid state pre amp(I had the one with the Gold solid state phono board) and that replaced an older Audible Illusion 3A with the same Gold solid state phono board. I now use a Whest PS.20 + MSU.20 phono stage because the Placette is line level only. Wonderful combination, has anyone else tried it?

Hi Tony,
I have one, too. After several bypass tests, such as using an EAR 88PB directly into my power amp (the EAR has a volume control) and a Benchmark DAC-1, I have consistently found the Placette Passive to be totally neutral in character.Happy listening.

I no longer have my Placette passive linestage but I have to agree, it was truly one of the cleanest most transparent "preamps" I have ever owned. And unlike some other passive units, the Placette doesn't kill the dynamics or sound "thin" in any way. Having 126 discrete volume steps and selectable inputs all via the convenience of remote control is an added bonus.
I have the Placette active linestage and the sound is wonderful!
