Hi,I am considering getting a pro amp to power my Maggies and have been reading how fan noise can be bothersome. Would it harm the amp to just disconnect the fan since the amp will be in open air? I'm looking at Carvin 1800, Behringer, Samson, and few other low priced, high power amps.
Thanks,
Pete

Look at the fan(s) label to see what DC voltage it needs. Measure the dimensions of the fan(s). Order a low rpm (quiet) fan from digi-key. Their catalog has the specs. for each fan. Make sure you get a ball-bearing fan. They last much longer than sleeve bearing types. Voila! No fan noise.
powering a set of supertweeters and the fan noise is pretty low. in fact i can hear a fan in another room being louder than the amps fan. nice amp for the money. solid like a tank.
Is the amp very warm/hot at your normal listening level (i.e. like most full class A amps)? If not, it's probably safe to disconnect the fan (or put a resistor to slow it down). On some pro amps, the fan only kicks-in when the operating temperature reaches a certain point.
These are excellent amps.
A better plan would be to replace it with a computer fan. I believe it's easy and cheap.
I wouldn't advise disconnecting the fan in any amp that has one. These types of amps are designed to use the fan to maintain a safe operating temperature, especially when the volume gets juiced up a bit.I had a similar problem using an SWR (professional bass guitar amp company) power amp on my subwoofers. It too had a nasty fan noise, but only when operated into the higher power regions. I ended up mounting the amp on a hanging bracket in the basement under the listening area (this also served to keep wiring and such nice and neat), and the result was no more noise.
You may not have that option. But under no terms would I consider removing the fan from ANY amp. If its there, its there for a reason!
