I am moving back to separates and just bought a MC275. I have a separate Rogue Stealth phono stage and I listen to vinyl 90% of the time. So all I think I need is a simple preamp mainly for volume and source switching. I do not need a remote or any other conveniences on the preamp.I am interested in letting my sources and amp shine through and want a preamp that doesn't add anything, is extremely transparent and does not take away from dynamics, tone, etc. I have had several well known preamps in the past that seemed to add their own character and which detracted from the overall transparency I am looking for.
My budget is $2,500 new or used. I am considering the Placette or Sonic Euphoria passives. Any advice on these and how they might match with the MC275? Also, I would be open to considering active designs as long as they are transparent and grain free.
Rest of system: Quad 2805, Lyra Dorian, Nottingham Spacedeck, MF A5 CDP.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Follow Ups:
The 1.2v unbalanced (RCA) input sensitivity of the Mac should work well with a passive if the source, Rogue Stealth in this case, can drive a passive device. Most sources can.I continue to use a Placette Passive Line Stage. Currently, an EAR 88PB phono stage, Benchmark DAC-1, and McIntosh MR500 tuner all sound great with the Placette. In several bypass tests, it proves itself to be literally transparent. Check it out.
Happy listening.
Thanks Jerry. I appreciate the response and advice on the MC275 setting with the Placette. I think I'll place an order today...
Try a TVC like the K&K which uses S&B TX-102 transformers. Well within your budget. If you want to spend more the Bent Audio TAP and Music First units also use the S&B transformers. You may need to look for these used though as I believe both are above your budget new.
Depends on the configuration and chassis options. Best to check directly with Kevin Carter.
