The amp kit I'm building is sensitive enoug to be driven by a passive pre-amp, and the manufacturer specs a 47K pot. Stereo 50K pots are few and far between, but there's lots of 10K and 100K pots. If I had to go 10K or 100K, which way should I go?Aside: if there's a source for stereo 50K log scale pots for around 30-40$ (preferably in Canada), let me know!!

If were me.. it would be PEC pots,,, built in Canada also.
Hi Jandg !
where can I buy PEC pot in Canada ?
I want to replace the pot on my Conrad-Johnson PV-5.
I am not sure off hand.. I can check around as I have the weekend off..There might be a dealer list on the PEC web site. I don't have a link handy.
I found at least 2 50K audio taper pots at www.partsconnextion.com.
I used a TKD 50K pot from them and it worked great.
In case you are unaware they are located in southern Ont.
Bill.
Thanks for lead, Bill. The TKD is a little over my budget, but I'll bite the bullet on this one.I also spotted a 4-deck 24 position rotary switch by Electroswitch that look like it's the basis of a ladder type resistor-based attenuator. It would definitely blow my budget and make me cross-eyed from soldering, but could be another viable alternative, I suppose. I think I'll e-mail partsconnexion.com and ask their opinion. Thanks again, Bill!
Hi Eric,Just to second Bill's suggestion of a TKD ... I installed a 25K TKD stepped attenuator as the volume control in my preamp (I understand they also make "conventional" pots, so I'm not sure which one Bill was recommending).
I did this because a mate of mine had had email correspondence with someone - a not too recently departed hifi "maestro" - who selected the TKD stepped attenuator for his very expensive preamp (the "Blowtorch").
Evidently, the maestro spent a considerable amount of time testing out different pots/stepped attenuators and decided the TKD sounded the best.
Installing the TKD made a phenomenal improvement to my preamp! :-))
So, if TKD make the appropriate 'K' stepped attenuator for your purposes, I would say ... go for it! (BTW, it is a complete, sealed unit - you don't have to solder reses to just a switch!) Quite expensive but you won't be disappointed.
Regards,
Andy, I was referring to the conventional TKD pot at about $60.00 US which was a little over his budget.
I used one to upgrade the volume pot in a Cary AE-3. Works great but no doubt the stepped attenuator is the way to go if you have the cash.
Bill.
For the money, you will not be able to beat the TKD volume pot, period. I've tried all the currently, and some not currently, available pots that sell for less than $100. You will not likely find anything better for less than double the price, if even that.If you have to pick a second place, I would go with Noble.
Good luck,
Better than PEC...?
I second the 50K TKD from parts connexion, my second choice would also be noble and my third would be a plain old Alps blue. I had an old hafler preamp that had the original pot replaced with a plastic TKD, excellent sounding.Nothing wrong with an Alps blue I've seen them as original pots in hafler DH110, Parasound Php-850,Primaluna, Cayin integrateds, jolida, ASL, Eastern Electric Minimax and too many others to list these are just some of the pieces I've owned. Eastern Electric chose the TKD as an upgrade to the Minimax and added a fourth input.I might drop a TKD in my minimax if the Alps ever fails.
The electroswitch is used by Atma-Sphere on their preamps and sounds very good. I also like the DACT attenuator that is on my Tom Evans Vibe.
If you can raise the ante to $240, the Goldpoint stepped series attenuator with .1% thin-film SMD resistors (according to Arn at Goldpoint) sounds as good as a ladder type.
