In Reply to: you're still looking at $2000 new per 2-channels posted by Tom Schuman on March 13, 2007 at 08:42:20:
the amp is used and about half that price. Original owner & still under warranty. I guess I could go and ask him to bring the amp over for a listening session but what if it doesn't deliver, it would be ackward to tell him " gee thanks but no thanks, I can help you load it back in your car" : )
There's one thing I wanted to clear-up in regards to what everyone is saying about power vs. volume. I never had trouble getting these speakers to play loud. The problem is that the loud I got was all high frequencies/mids and no Bass. I just didn't feel like the dual 6.5" woofers were being energized and delivering that chest thumping upper Bass you would expect with a full range speaker. The Melody SP3 tube amp was totally lacking here. The Denon AVR is better but still not great.
I was actually going to leave the Denon in there until the other night during a movie when it clipped the left channel, sounded like an amplified Arc Welder. Even last night in 2 channel mode it just didn't have that full, rich, dynamic sound you would expect from very good speakers and a Linn LP12.
Follow Ups:
if you are looking for chest thumping, then i believe you are into the wrong speaker. go cerwin vega. quads are made for people who don't care about chest thumping. believe me, they are smooth and sweet and nice to listen to, but chest thumping they will never be with a couple of 6 inch drivers per side. btw it is not really a full range speaker either.
sounds like you may have a damaged speaker now, too.
i am sorry to say, you are on the amp and speaker merry go round that the high end industry thrives on. divide and conquer, is the philosophy (i.e., when it comes to selling components, pretend that each component does the work of the entire chain.)
it's a tough game and there are no short cuts, unless you have a lot of money AND a lot of experience.
well I certainly feel like i'm on a merry go round and I want to get off. Luckilly my speaker is not damaged but I obviously don't want to clip an amp again.
When I said chest thumping I didn't mean in a Cervin Vega fashion. I mean a mid-bass you can feel and has a presence in the room. It migh be room-accousitcs, but I have 2 panels, 2 traps, and have heard better Bass with a pair of small monitors and single 6" woofer. I really think it's a power issue. Yes these speakers are efficient but if you look at the manuf. recomended power rating it's obvious the Kevlar woofers are hogs.
Looks like I will be rolling the dice on aother amp, at least this time it will be used and could be re-sold for not much loss.
don't forget to try all the speaker placement options before you lay down for new hardware. small changes can make huge differences.
I have the same problem with my Usher CP-6371 in my large 30'x 35' room. I have 4 JR DIY bass traps but no sound panels in my room. Rotel RB-985 5x100 watt amp. I don't get much of that lowerr mid bass either. I would love to upgrade my amp to something serious too. But from years of reading posts on here I suspect its the room acoustics is playing a very large part of this problem. This link below should tell you alot about acoustical treatments. When we auditioned these QUAD 22L's at the dealer being powered by 50watt rogue tube amps they sounded great. His room was much bigger.

i assume you are bi-wiring with 4 channels of the rotel? that might be a solution.
the fact is, you need an amplifier with very serious current delivery. the only one I have heard in my house was a YBA 2alpha DT, the best and punchiest midbass ever. Serious 70wpc, 140 into 4 ohms. Great dynamics on rock. You can still get these for around $2000 but they do not come up often used.
midbass suckout can be a room problem but also a crossover problem. too much crossover will simply kill dynamics. not to mention your preamp and source need to be pretty good to get true bass and midbass punch.
Yeah, your right about that. I am missing alot of mid bass because of everything you mentioned. I need to build more bass traps and sound acoustic panels. I am only running one amp per speaker on that Rotel 5x100 amp. Also that Rotel preamp sure leaves a lot be desired.Plan of attack> build 2 more bass traps to add to my 4 exsisting ones. Build two sound panels for my 1st reflection points. Build 4 Corner/ceiling triangle panels. That should help alot.
Need to upgrade my Rotel gear, speaker cables.

His room is only 13' x 18' and hes sitting 9' away from that front wall. Thats a big no no in the acoustics websites on how to setup your sound system. Suppose to follow the 38% rule. Thats either 38% frmo front wall or the back wall. Which for a 18' long room that comes out to 6' 8"
