I had a chance over the weekend to briefly hear the Simaudio Moon i-7 (integrated amp) and the P5.3 (preamp) and W5.3 (amp). Very impressive and, based on the reviews I've read (yes, reviews are just a guide), Simaudio and BAT seem to be reaching the same goals but by very different paths of course. Unfortunately there isn't a Balanced Audio Technology dealer nearby so I was wondering if anyone had compared any of the Simaudio gear to some comparable BAT gear. I would like to hear your impressions if you have.

JeffM,I can only comment on the Moon I-5 and my current integrated, the BAT 300X-SE. The I-5 was certainly a decent amp, and could hold it's own with comparably priced gear. The BAT, however, is in a different league. For about double the price of the I-5, I realized improvements in the areas of clarity, resolution, fullness (or "coherence"), and much more realistic tonal balance. Bass is better as well, as it should be since the BAT is double the output of the Moon. I'm also a believer in companies having a "house sound" and that leads me to believe that the BAT would still better the more powerful I-7 in most or all areas that matter most. Just my opinion of course, but I've yet to hear an integrated that can best the BAT.
Both companies have been around for a while and would suggest also searching through the archives for other opinions. Your thoughts about Simaudio and BAT reaching the same goals, but by very different paths matches my experiences with both brands as well. In a nutshell, SimAudio stuff tend to be on the quick, lively, upfront, detailed side of the fence. BAT makes both solid state and tube stuff with a slightly dark to natural signature that falls in between the ARC and CJ. All BAT stuff shares has a similar signature with distinctly different personalities. The standard models are more “traditional”- warm, full bodied, and rich sounding. Where the SE versions offer a more modernized sound and tend to be leaner, clearer, and more dynamic. Additionally, Victor Khomenko of BAT often hangs here and answers questions.

Thanks for the input. I did make several searches but almost everything was comparing various models within each manufacturer although I was able to make some assumptions just from the general chatter about each brand.I'm glad that I had a chance to hear the Simaudio gear. It was good. But I suspect that my tastes are going to be more along the BAT line. It looks like it will be road trip time to the nearest BAT dealer.
