I want to pass along some findings with a new Sonic Impact T amp I've been playing with. The freq response as measured on a Audio Precision Portable One Plus into an 8 ohm load shows just a 1dB drop at 20Hz. I removed the input caps and found them to be 1.2uF as measured on a Fluke 79 multimeter. I had planned on having to replace the .33uF caps with the recommended 2.2uF caps but there is no room for anything but smt parts without major mods to this version.
The other item is that the freq response is within .5dB between the left and right channels, I expected a lot worse than that.
I'm ok with it as is for my use but I thought I would pass it along.
Follow Ups:
Those specs are pretty decent for such an inexpensive little amp. Are the SMT pads really too small to solder leads onto?
The pads are ok for very small wires, the problem I had was attempting to replace the chip caps with through hole radial type caps as they will interfere with the pot on this newest version. When possible I can post a picture of the inside. I cannot believe the sound this amp produces through my Klipsch RB35s,or even my cheapo Pioneers.
I have the Sonic Impact Super T amp which comes in the metal chassis with big volume knob in the center of the face plate.I'm not sure but I suspect my unit may use a slightly different circuit board / layout.
I didn't quite understand which caps you were thinking about replacing and with what values. Are these input coupling caps? Output caps?
Sorry for the lack of clarity in my original post. The schematic I have shows c3 and c4 input coupling caps as .33uf, and the series resistors r1 and r2 as 20k. The caps in mine measured 1.2uF and the resistors 20k. The bigger enclosure you have probably allows for all kinds of mods. I found this website to be a big help.
Thanks for the web link. You're right, it's full of great information on the T amps.
