Audio Research LS3B used for around $500 and am very pleased. This was a real sonic upgrade. Lots of inputs and a good price on the used market. I know that you are looking for a tube pre, but I have recently read many posts about folks who (against conventional wisdom) went SS pre and tube amp and are happy. Have an open mind. It is the outcome that is key not the technology.
Follow Ups:
Agreed, with tube practicality moving in the wrong direction I think Herron Audio coming out (a while back) with a solid state preamp speaks volumes.
Well, I'm coming from a SS pre (Adcom 565) and tube amp and found I really liked the all tube chain better - at least with the Dared pre. I hear you about conventional wisdom though - always good to experiment using your ears instead of opinions.
and while it was good at the time I bought the Adcom, it really does not belong in the same class as my used (new to me) ARC. You may find a positive result with many high quality preamps.
