>O.M.G. this amp does not suck!<High praise indeed, for a Bryston...
Follow Ups:
I have owned several amps that "do not suck"... And a couple that were outstanding. ;-)
you've got a valid point of view!
I dont think that any high-end-audio companies produce any equipment that sucks.
Despite my under-achievers equipment review, the Bryston 4BSST remains a viable contemporary classic.
How many high-end amps actually find use in recording studios? This is one of those rare products thats at home in a pro-studio or a livingroom. nuff-said!
The audiophile hobby is based on personal taste, that said, the Bryston cannot be everything to everyone.
how do you like it served? burned to a crisp or bloody as hell?
I tried the older 4BST (which I did not like) so I guess it's not fair for me to judge the new 4BSST. I hope to try one someday.
The SST Quad-Complementary circuit is a unique innovation in classic A/B amplifier topology. It sounds more like a class-A amplifier(imho).Very pure and open sounding. Of course I'm fully aware that the CJ linestage contributes to this experience.
hiI normaly write articulate/entertaining(hopefully) reviews, emulating the style of professional audio reviewers.
My previous review of the 3BSST must be at least 500 words.
Anyway a couple of Asylum members got it into their heads that I'm an industrial propagandist troll. That kinda took the joy out of my writing efforts.
Dont get me wrong, I think the 4BSST is an amazing amp.
It is the best amp I've ever had.
If you need to know what it actually sounds like, just check my 3BSST review and add a couple'a exclamation marks at the end of it.
I happen to have a 4B. One feature I like about it is that it has clipping indicators. Sounds silly perhaps, but with my power hungry DQ 10's and my occasional desire to rock out, I find the feature useful (and driver saving). Why don't others have this feature? I liked my Aragon and Belles - but wished they had the clipping feature. [this feature was not the reason I bought Bryston, but I have come rely on this feature]That being said, my 4b is about 13 years old, and I am beginning to consider replacement in the future. I've been happy with Bryston, and will audition the SST, but would look elsewhere before jumping. The SST would be about what I would want to spend. For those of you in disagreement or repulsed with the brand, what is your preferred alternative for about the same $$ ?
Your ears are the best clipping meters you could have... if you hear your drivers starting to distort, then you know you're clipping and it's time to turn the volume down a notch.
Thx. I'd like to think I would hear clipping. I certainly have in my younger days. When the lights on the Bryston start to go yellow/red, I'm not hearing it. Granted, the lights just flash for a half a second or so - not steady on - where I am guessing I would hear / notice the clipping if they were steady on. However, there are some recordings that have something silent that drains power. Down by the river by Neil Young and also Ten Pin Ally by SRV have non audible spots that will drive the lights to clipping, without a corresponding musical output. The clipping light feature helps avoid these occasional power robbers, where as on tunes like these (with just a few instruments) I might have a tendency to crank it up even more on occasion.Your point is well taken however, and perhaps i have become accustomed to the lights and thus have simply not driven the amp into clipping.

Good choice,great amp!
theres been a price increase though
"The 350A Reference costs $3995, an increase of $500 over the price of the original 350A. Even with all-new circuitry inside, 350A owners can have their 350A upgraded to the Reference version. This costs $1500 and includes new circuit boards, new wiring, and a 350A Reference front panel."check the Sounstage review
