Hi, I have a chance to pick up the Reference500 (built in the 90s) for ~$4k. The unit looks quite beaten up but the owner said it has been well serviced while in used (the unit has been sitting in shelf for 2 years). Some tubes will also need replacement. Is it worth the plunge? How much can I expect to pay for re-tube or to check-up the whole unit? I listened to the newer Neoclassic models before and simply love the sound, but not the price. Have heard this older Reference model have all the same high-end qualities of the newer Neoclassic, would you agree? All comments are welcomed.
Follow Ups:
Don't pay $4k if the unit is not pristine. This is the price i've seen for some in mint condition.
Generally speaking the new Manley stuff is quieter (lower noise floor) with a better, more controled bottom end but if you don't compare side by side you can be very happy with the older stuff from the 90s.
But it's hard to conduct busines in CA, especially manufacturing.
The "AnEve Manley Production" front plaque is enough to keep me from buying one.
In any case, if you'd like a line left off the engraving on the insert, just request that. We try to keep everyone happy.

actually after I unload my Krell (15 years old) and Threshold (20) I might take you up on that.
Pop me an email from my website and let me know when you are ready.

Of course I have nothing against you, I don't know you, etc. You always look cheerful in magazine/show photos with some kind of fuzzy hat.
As for the emblem, there is nothing wrong with it and I applaud your sense of humour. It does not bother me as much as the spelling error on the EAR power amp!
Thanks for taking the time to clarify this. I thought I might have inadvertently offended you, tho' hopefully not with poor grammar or misspellings :> )

as far as I'm concerned.
Check with Manley on upgradeability.
You may need the serial numbers.
Manley are very helpful, from what I read
