Over the past year each one of the 5 channels on this amp has been blowing out. Unfortunately the warranty was only 5 years for the Lexicon even though the amp is a re-baggage Bryston. It costs my $200 dollars to get the channel fixed each time. I called and asked why this might be happening and they stated something about the output stage is not that good and when I get it fixed they are putting in a different one. The amp is only 6 years old and I do not push it that hard. I am running Vandersteen speakers. How long should an amp last given normal usage?
Follow Ups:
Bryston builds very high quality products and firmly stands behind them with a 20 year warranty. I own a pair of 7B-STs that developed a minor transformer noise problem a couple of years ago and Bryston fixed them both for free within 10 days and paid for return shipping on both 50 lb units. I don't think you can equate the Lexicon line with Bryston's name branded units.
You may wish to send an E-Mail to James Tanner at Bryston (jamestanner@bryston.ca). He is very helpful. Bryston does offer an upgrade from the 9Bst to the 9Bsst - http://www.bryston.ca/pdfs/Bryston9BSSTUpgrade.pdfThere's no sense in shelling out continuous $ for an older amp vs. having something more current that sounds better.
I know several people with old Bryston 9Bst amps with no problems for many years. Unfortunately Harman Int'l (Lexicon) is not noted for pristine customer service. While it may have been made by Bryston who knows what they (Lexicon) specified when they had them make it for them. Perhaps they had some cheaper stuff in the specs for the build as they knew this was only a temporary measure for them.
