smallish listening room out in the sticks (coastal nc). so little opportunity to do any serious listening before buying. would welcome suggestions. have audio research sp-10, listen almost exclusively to vinyl of all genres (mostly acoustic and 60's-70's rock), and thinking about spendor s8e with music reference rm-200 but concerned about getting over ripe. loved the rm-9 mk ii more than i cared for the vt 100 mk ii i owned. looking for synergistic match. recommendations?

Slightly off topic, but I am running an ARC 100.2 SS amp with an ARC LS15 preamp into a pair of Harbeth Compact 7's with great success. Not the quite the ame you-are-there quality of a tube amp, but very quick, quiet and emotionaly expressive with a taut low end.
FWIW, I prefer the RM-9 to the RM-200. But the latter is definitely "leaner" sounding, so that might work for you. As for driving the Spendors, I have no idea. But cli09 is a Spendor fan, so he probably gives good advice here.
To me Spendors like more power. I have a pair of 1/2e's and the Music Reference RM-9 sounded very nice with them, but to me the Spemdors still seemed a little starved. I have a small listening room as well. I have heard the RM-200 in Roger Modjeski's system and think highly of that amp. Not sure though that MR and Spendors are a good match.
HI,
I bought a SP-10 brand new when they were current. Great preamp. However, if you plan on using low to medium output MC's you will have to buy a head amp. The SP-10 does not have enough gain. If you are using and continue to use a MM or a high output MC, it is hard to beat, IMO. But, I prefer low output MC's which caused me to sell my SP-10.I replaced my SP-10 with an SP-11 MkII which I believe is a better preamp but many would argue with that opinion.
listening to vinyl on sota star sapphire/sme v/benz ruby 3 and am happy enough with that for now. do you think the sp-10 will work well with the music reference amp? do you have an opinion re the music reference matched with spendor s8e speakers?
