Hi
By now, the PL should be quite abundant. Does anyone have any experience with a combination of a SS preamp with the PL 5?
Any comments will be welcomed. THanks

I've been using a MF A308 pre with my PL5 and it is awesome. Quiet, clear neutral sound. BTW If you haven't tried the Shugang Penta SC kt88 you are missing great sound. Make sure you get the SC or smooth plate ones. They have so much more resolution + power than anything else I've heard. I'm also using nos ax7's and au7's from Kevin. Am running Maggies and Quad 63's.

Thanks for this prompt response. Indeed 6moons were not too enthusiastic about the Modwright (tube)/PL5 combo.
My preamp is an updated Threshold NS-10 that doesn't have your typical SS sound, though.
FWIW. I wouldn't buy a PL5 to match with a SS pre-amp without listening first. Its an excellent match with the PL3 which has a warm bump in the upper bass and compensates for a corresponding lack in the PL5. I've had little success yet with the PL5 with other pre-amps )all tube though). I think the PL3/5 combo is excellent and have been using one for a year and a half. Read the reviews of the PL6 and PL 7 in Stereophile and Absolute Sound. Deutsch's review in Stereophile matches my experience with the PL3 and as I recall the other reviewer of the PL6 refers to the bass issues of the PL5.
