For a different point of view:Don't stereotype HT recievers as trash. A Panasonic HT reciever can be an incredible performer. I have the older SAXR50. It's a Class D "Digital" amp with a ton of features. It converts all analog input signals to 24/96 digital. All digital input signals remain digital and are never converted to analog. The amplifier stages are activated directly by the data (0's and 1's) in the signal. Balance, Tone and all other controls are completely digital. Sensitivity is incredible. Because it's all digital until your speakers convert the electrical energy to analog, the purity, sensitivity and sheer bass punch is astounding for such a low cost product. I use the SAXR50 to drive a pair of MMGs that are fairly challenging speakers to drive (plus a subwoofer). I like my Panny better than my Jolida 1501RC (which is a fantastic integrated amp in its own right).
The newer Panasonic HT recievers are even better than mine, at about $250. The only caveot is that you must allow 100 hours of break-in during which it may sound a little shrill.
Follow Ups:
I am using the XR55 in biamped mode. As an upgrade I am considering $1K for a used Int. Amp and a Lavry DA10 or some modded DACs .Anything else will not make much of a difference. But I am not rushing into this upgrade. A Bolder digital-modded SB3 is feeding it well. Along with some isolation and power cords, I am quite happy now.
The Panasonic receivers have intrigued me since I began hearing people talk about them a few years ago. I guess I'd always heard that the XR25/50's really needed to be modded which adds to the cost. But you feel the Panasonic's are better sounding then the other products in my price range?? What about build quality? I've had some issues with Panasonic products in the past. Thanks for the reply...gives me something to think about.
"Better" is subjective. I am just offering up a sound alternative at an extremely low price. Build quality on the Pannys is at the massed produced consumer level. They seem durable since my unit is 3 years old with no issues. These units have a ton of functionality built into them. Some people have these units modded with better speaker jacks and other components. I personally wouldn't bother. The Panny will serve you well for years until you have a better idea for a more expensive upgrade. Just a thought.
..and the amazing thing to me is these Panny digital amps sound so good on older speakers like you have.
