I am considering the Accuphase A-60 or A-50 power amps. I would like to hear from anybody who has had experience with these amps. I will be trying to drive a pair of Rockport Merak II loudspeakers (87db). Constructive feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Follow Ups:
I have the A-50 and until recently it was driving a pair of Dynaudio Confidence C1, (4 Ohms, 86db!). I never had any problems with its power. Although the amp is rated 100W at 4 Ohms (and the C1 does not really go below that), the meter once showed 179 Watts. No clipping whatsoever. It is an old model, but when I wanted to have it checked by Accuphase when I was still in Japan (they call it "overhaul"), the service man said that it would be a waste of money unless I hear some problems. My piece was made in 1993, but the guy said that they had very few in for servicing.
Also, I talked to a number of dealers in Japan, and Accuphase people at high end shows about upgrading it to A-50V or A-60 and they said that they all have their characteristic sound, but in the end I might prefer the A-50. So it stayed.
Hello! A50 is a very old model (discontinued by the end of 1998) that was substituted by a50V - probably the most highly acclaimed Accuphase poweramp. The "postfix" V, I think, means verified, and their V models are usually a real step better. Accuphase change models not too often and only when they feel it is really worth it. Both, 50 & 60 are class A designs with the same type mos-fet transistors. A50V has 10 parallel per channel, A60 has 10, with current feedback principle for both, but A60 features the new Accuphase now-how -multiple circuit summing, that was first introduced with a/b P7000 model, which the company consider their bigger achievement. Both 50V and 60 are very very good, their build is an overkill, like all Accuphase products, but I personally prefer the looks of A60 (it is slightly more masculine). I cannot say how they differ soundwise, but I think both are better for chamber, classical, jazz. I compared A50V in the same room and setup with P7000. I bought p7000 as I listen mostly to rock and need more slam, even if it comes for more money. But don't get me wrong, their class A designs are very powerful and their power rating is conservative at least. I think that A60 will drive Your speakers with ease and GRACE. BTW A60 and A50V have digital faceplate indication, not the classic Accuphase arrow-meters.
Get one (or 2), You won't be disappointed.

P.S. Prepare yourself for an all-Accuphase system. the difference (out of experience) is dramatic.
The original A-50 is every bit as good as it's successors! The difference between them being a small degree of refinement.I actually prefer my switchable class A/AB P-400 (1978). It's more powerfull, fuller sounding, and performs better at low volume. The A-series is just a bit smoother and transparent overall.
Yes, I am sure they are good. Actually, I always recommend my friends to get a used accuphase over new krell, moon, or ml.

I got my A60/C2400 combo about a month ago. Driving my Dali MS4, it seems to have all the power I need, with the meter rarely going above 2 watts! (I managed to pull about 30W for a second at the closing of a full blown winds symphony track with an organ behind it! It didn't sound stretched either) It sounds a whole lot more powerful than the 500W Rowland 501s I had before. As for sound quality, I have no complaints so far. Dynamics, detail and musicality are all a step above the Rowland combo IMHO. Interestingly, contrary to common belief, it sounds less warm and wooly than the Rowland, too.I am now toying with different combinations of power cables, footers, etc., in my system to tweak for my version of "best" sound.
Hello! How is the burn-in process? Already feeling difference? I ask because yesterday I heard another minor step up with mine and that after 2,5 years! Really a LONG time to burn in...
Serge.
Yes, the sound does seem to be changing over time, but it never irritates. It began with a sort of hyper detailed sound. By now, things are more in line and the sound is just superb.Never regretted from replacing my Rowland Synergy IIi and 501 with it and the C2400. Though the system now does prompt me to think of upgrading my DP55V CD player to the new DP500 or DP78.
