Ok I have Shanling STP 80 amp, with a pair of Von Schweikert Audio VR'2s. After reviewing a buddy's system with an added sub to his stereo I notice a BIG sound improvement especially in the bass area, I do believe he has HSU Research sub and SS gear, my gear is tubes which I love but anyway, what do I need to do to add an additonal sub to my amp? Upgrade the amp or ? I have been looking into Rogue Cronus, Jolida and Primaluna integrated amps (SWEET) still undecided on what to buy or do But for those that have owned Shanling gear I need to hear from. I am a newbie with strickly tube gear equipment, learning everyday and asking too many questions on this forum but I have to learn somehow, lol!I Know that going to a subs takes away from 2 channel stereo system however it does offer an amazing sound inprovment any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

If you have another pair of pre-main outs from your preamp then it is easier to hook up a sub. Using a Velodyne SMS-1 subwoofer controller with almost any sub will help you get where you want to go. A good rule of thumb is to load the sub crossover to 2 times the lower frequency response of your main speakers and experiment from there. My speakers go down to 35hz, so I tried 70hz crossover and played around with that until I arrived at 60hz crossover using the SMS-1. A lot will be dependant on room and equipment synergy.
The right sub(s) will greatly enhance your stereo just as they did ours. Checkout "speaker level" type subs from REL, Vandersteen and others that noticeably improve your midrange by taking the load off your main amp(s) and speakers below 80hz by 6db allowing them to sound better above 80hz.Working with placement, volume, and contour adjustments you'll be amazed at what can be done.

I suggest getting the latest Absolute Sound and reading the article on installing and adjusting subs. If you get a good quality sub, and adjust it properly (very important) it does not degrade a good two channel setup. I love my Essex SW3.
