I've been watching ebay and audiogon for a used tube preamp.
I'm looking for recomendations. It needs to be black and about
$300-$600 used. I don't need a remote. I like a warm sound
but not slow and soggy. I am considering:Quicksilver Line Preamp
Counterpoint 3.1
Cary AE-3 djh
Rouge MetisARC is too dry for me and CJ isn't black.
Are there any other good choices to look out for??
Follow Ups:
Go buy a Bottlehead Pre It's a "kit" but you can paint it Black if that blows yr jets.. Ohhhh by the way, the sound quality is far beyond your budget expectations though.
I think they are the two best (mainstream) pre's available in the roughly $1,000 class at present. The Metis has phono, which I did not need as I have a dedicated phono pre. It might be hard to get a Metis in that range used but the QS is probably doable for maybe a late '90s one.
I had quite nice results when I had an Anthem Pre-2L in my system for a number of years. You can get one used in your price range and they come in black. Also comes with a remote for volume/mute FYI.
Good luck,
Mark
The JMA Merlin is $795 and it's new. And, it's definitely not "soggy."
