I am extremely pleased with the performance of my Model 10 and a couple of years ago I would have thought I could not ask for more from an amplifier. However, audiophilia being the insidious disease that it is, I cannot help but wonder what parameters might the Model 10 be bettered. I'm curious to hear from former Model 10 owners who moved on for better or worse. Did you stay in the Rowland family? What prompted the change; how much more of an investment did you make and did you find superior performance.
Follow Ups:
I went from the Model 10 to the 302. I find the latter MUCH better - in every way you can possibly think of. I have owned the 302 for about the same length of time that I owned the 10 (approximately 3 years). I do not find it to be less musically involving or enjoyable at all, as one of the responders said (my apologies, if I used the wrong words!) By the way, others who have heard the 300 series and 201s/501s say the 300 series is significantly better. Hope this helps. In case you're wondering, I am using my 302 with Rockport Antares.
See if Rowland would build a battery supply for the Model 10. I bet that would be an interesting endeavor. I have a model 10, it's a great amp, better than the current ICEpower stuff they are making, I think.
Hmmm... this is a tough one.I had the Model 12s for a couple of years and really liked them. That is, until my dealer loaned me his Model 9Ts. HUGE change in dynamics and a much more subtle change in the mids and highs (for the worse in this case). At that time the 300 series had just been released so I went for the 301s in hope that they would combine the super-sweet mids and highs of the 12s with the dynamics of the 9s.
The 301s were pretty amazing amps. All of the audiophile qualities improved significantly over what I was used to. Faster, quieter, bigger soundstage, etc, etc, etc...
Since then I've used the 201s and the 501s as well. They are all fine amps. Unfortunately, I found something missing in that the newer ICE amps (300 series, 201, 501, etc) seem to strip some of the emotion and feeling out of the music. Everything is absolutely "correct" it's just not as much fun to listen to music.
I've been playing with a set of Ayre MX-Rs over the weekend and they bring back a lot of what the 12s had with better dynamics. Unfortunately, they cost $16,500 and that's just a bit (well, a lot) more than I wanted to spend right now.
I think that I'm going to pickup a pair of used M12s and play with them for a while. If they work as I remember then I may end up saving about $12K :)
Through this process my speakers changed several times Vandersteen 2ce sig -> Watt/Puppy 6 -> Watt/Puppy 7 -> Duette.
For your reference:
The M9Ti/TiHC and M8Ti/TiHC all use the same output devices as the 10, 12, and 112. The 8Ts and 9Ts all use a more traditional transistor as the output. The Ti amps will have the same sweetness of the 10s and 12s but with MUCH better dynamics... If you like the sound of the 10 then you may want to look for a used 8Ti or 8TiHC.
