Not so random thoughts on vinyl... (Long)

Posted by spindoctor on June 9, 2021 at 14:14:56:

I just listened to the 1962 recording of Louis Ansermet conducting the Orchestre de la Swisse Romande playing Saint-Saens Symphony No.3 in C Minor Op. 78 on a mint London blueback lp. This is a personal favorite symphony and this is an amazing recording. First, the playback places me in center orchestra seats in the concert hall. Second, I was 11 years old when this was recorded and I'm now 72 years old. Vinyl as a time machine! And I get to hear amazing music and conductors. Third, modern cartridges and stereo playback systems truly are incredible for what they bring to my ears. (I use a high end Grado cartridge and vacuum tube playback systems. I grew up as a rock and roll musician, yet I've always appreciated classical music. And as we age, I believe our brain is adapted for handling the complexity of the music. For example in this piece, the interplay between the piano and organ. I'm truly grateful that vinyl like this exist and was preserved for our ears. I owe a vote of thanks to all the previous owners who took great care of their lips.
