RE: Can an LP12 travel without total disassembly?

You will need to remove the platter. Normally the subplatter does not need to be removed so long as it is raised so that the spindle/bearing point cannot touch the thrust plate in the bearing itself. Most people prop it up by wedging some polystyrene between the subplatter and top plate. Remove the counterweight from the arm and secure the arm to the rest with a wire twist.
However that is for relatively local moves. Across the Atlantic may require further attention. I would not remove the springs especially not to the top unless the recipient (or you) has been trained by Linn in how to assemble the turntable. Just having a go at it without knowledge will result in poor sound and one may as well have purchased a cheap plastic turntable.
My advice is also to use the original packing (buy it from the US distributor if you do not have it) as this provides the correct protection and allows the placement of the various parts that do need to be parted from the whole assembly. Then securely pack this in further and more sturdy packaging for the transit.
Overall I agree with Sgreen and Dave Billinge. Don't do it.
Re-reading your message it strikes me that this is not the result of a sale to a third party but that you are relocating to somewhere over here. Sell your LP12 and just ship the arm and cartridge. Then buy another LP12 over here. Or use the chance to investigate some other spinners.
