Replacing My Linn Axis--NOT-- Hercules II to the rescue
Posted by Batman on November 5, 2012 at 21:40:13:
So, thanks to all the wise inmates who suggested I replace the blown PSU of my beloved (25 year old) Linn Axis with the Hercules II PSU. It took 10 days to arrive from merry olde England and it is a very well-made unit on a top-notch PCB.
Installation was a bit of a challenge in that the slot in the chassis for the power switch had to be enlarged and the board had to mounted slightly diagonally to allow room to connect the ribbon cable from the power switch to the Hercules II board. I mounted it on 1/2-inch nylon standoffs with #6 x 3/4" sheet metal screws.
So, how does it sound? In a word fabulous, speed is spot on (checked with strobe). There's more weight to the music, more wood in the violins more presence to voices. It is definitely an improvement at least compared to what I can remember the TT sounded like with the Linn PSU.
Thanks to the inmates who encouraged me to do this rather than replace this TT. I'm a very happy camper. I photographed the entire process and shortly there will be a page on my web site illustrating the entire installation process.
BTW, I ran into one small problem along the way and the folks at Stamford Audio couldn't have been more helpful. Highly, enthusiastically, fanatically recommended.
