If you have a decent mono collection, by all means get a mono cartridge.
I believe (I may be wrong) a stereo cartridge picks up vertical information on the walls of the groove, while a mono cartridge picks up horizontal info in the groove. Mono records do sound less noisy with a mono cartridge, and are much more forgiving with scratched records.
