Cut a 1" counter-bore with a Forstner bit with a drill press. Or, no drill press/cabinet won't fit under the quill, use a variable speed plunge router as slow as the trigger will allow. No router? A hammer you likely have and an inexpensive 3/4" chisel to cut a mortise.
