I can't comment on the "sound" of various battery technologies, since I've never tried anything but lead acid types. I was using two 12 volt lead acid motorcycle batteries in series to power my 24 VDC phono stage. I placed a (pre-charged to correct voltage) 54,000 µF capacitor across the battery terminals, and the sound improved.

Apparently at least some types of batteries (including lead acid) generate noise as they discharge, which would explain why the capacitor improved the power supply.
