RESOLVED: stereo mix was disabled
Posted by thump on January 5, 2017 at 17:28:33:
i found the problem after opening advanced options in the volume control. i probably tried to resolve the issue before using the confounding new control panel and got frustrated with it. i probably turned stereo mix off myself because when it's ALSO enabled with the mixer, it has a lag that creates a really annoying reverb feedback problem. it needs to be enabled to allow software to see the soundcard, but it also needs to be muted in the mixer to prevent delay feedback.
i'm not 100% sure, but i THINK riding the input gain with the device fader instead of using the one for firefox results in recordings with a little bit better fidelity, i'm guessing because the soundcard isn't at 100% and distorting a little.
if you ever have a similar problem, just make sure stereo mix is enabled.
