Playing around with setup

Posted by watts on August 24, 2021 at 14:46:58:

I mean, of course I am; I own Maggies! Perpetual tweaking.

But recently got myself a Umik.

Been a few years since I have replied on here too.... but still own my 3.6's and they will end up in my will. :)

Over the past few days I have read several hours of Limage setup notes and experiences.

In my current room of 19.5 x 10.5 x 7 no windows; just one door, I have been experimenting with long wall/short wall/limage.

Attached is a frequency sweep graph shot (var smoothing) of: (red line) basically a Cardas position on the long wall. There is a large desk on one end so not quite centered along the long wall, but nearest speaker is 5'5" from the side wall, and both 4'4" from front wall with seating position 1' from back wall.

versus: (blue line) Limage setup where speakers are parallel to and a distance of 40-44% from the front wall (still playing around with it), tweets in, and 6.5" from sidewalls. I sit as far back as possible, but that is where the L-shaped desk is, so probably about 3 feet from back wall. If wifey is working from home (like right now) :( then more like 7 feet.

No treatments, and all CD/DVD racks removed etc. Looking at the graph obviously the bass is more uniform and smoother with the Limage setup, of course the cavernous soundstage is enjoyed as well. And some tracks are quite bright, but that should be able to be tamed with some absorption.

My thoughts: The long wall setup has a boom at 45 hz, which a tuned basstrap could absorb, and there is a null at 140 hz but not as deep as the 75hz one with Limage setup. I do enjoy the intimate equilateral setup as well, but that situation does need some reverberation treatment as well, according to my ears. Not sure if treatment can remove nulls, or destructive interference? Anyone had success with this?

I have some treatments on the way, so trying to decide which setup to go with before fastening the panels to the walls, taking into consideration not overdoing it and killing the spaciousness of course. :)

what do you guys think?

Also I have graphs comparing bass responses vs. sidewall distances for Limage setup if someone is interested.....
