Learning to ride by seat of the pants. No tach or speedo. You had to know the powerband of your bike. Some of the earlier bikes were so peaky, it's like you had no HP at lower RPMs... then max HP in one tiny area of the RPM range. Then, none above that.

I remember the old beat-up 100cc Hodaka Super Rat. You had to wind the piss out of it. And keep the R's up by shifting all the time. Because once you fell off the pipe... it took forever to get back into the HP range. And you'd just die on some uphill section. I learned to shift without the clutch. Because, just the action of pulling the clutch lever was enough to drop you off the powerband.

Steering in the dirt is all power and braking. Lots of fun. Power sliding around corners. Counter-steering. Berms, ledges...

Gonna have to look into getting that 250cc KTM...
