almost always the lowest moving mass with the strongest motor - the fullrange folks over at diyaudio think Beta 12LTA is a powerhouse - it does have pretty good midrange sensitivity in a Karlson 12 but kinda misses the transient snap of drivers with stronger motor.
since a speaker is buried deeper in the klam type than the Ultra Fidelity style, it may have more bounce artifacts than a regular Karlson coupler. Boosting the highs or running the coax HF a bit higher than normal will offset some of that stuff - its really not heard at some distance back. Karlson was probably right to say the front chambers needed several coats of varnish and in the 10" klam used a thin sheet of acrylic on the top plate. That seems to be a pretty good klam other than the particleboard flexing too much. Karlson's 15" klam AP100/Oliver Magna-Clam looked like it was somewhat scaled from the 10" model and was said to run an Altec 421 plus a K-tube tweeter - that one went into Radio City Music Hall.
I think it would be fun to cut the dust-screen out of an Eminence Beta series coax and mount a K-tube down into its horn exit - extend the tube so the tube's aperture merges with the main aperture - brace the 1" plastic pipe tube to the top plate with a small piece of plywood bored with a 1 1/4" bit.
the original 12" Karlson is a kicky little thing for its size and could run an internal K-tube to keep things compact and safe for club use. With a handle on top it could be easily carried. A top mounted K-tube would sound nice and blend well too.
my sample of the Oliver Phase III klam had a lapped cone 10" alnico magnet
guitar speaker - I think Eminence makes a guitar 10 with similar cone today. Phase III was vented and from what I understand, so was the 15" klam. From what I can tell, a sealed rear chamber may be better with sources with powerful drum transients. A little 8" klam makes a pretty big noise.![]()
