RE: Youtube Video on the Placebo Effect.

Posted by Todd Krieger on July 17, 2022 at 08:47:57:

"Some seem to think everything sounds the same and no differences exist."

I don't know about "everything"..... Maybe except loudspeakers...... I have encountered people who think all wire and electronics "sounds the same."

"One even said upgrading Speakers makes no difference."

Can't say I encountered that....

"Apparaently the Kef bottom-of-the-line Bookshelf is no different than the Top of the Reference Series.
'Whaaaaaaa?"

Note that claiming not to hear differences can also be "placebo effect"..... It can go both ways.

"What do you think about the Placebo Effect?"

I believe it is very real..... I also believe that if audiophiles consider the possibility of this when evaluating gear, they generally end up making better decisions, over the long term, in regard to achieving tangible improvements to their systems.

"I know it exists, but applying it to all aspects of Hi Fi Gear seems extreme."

Well, I do agree with you about loudspeakers.....

"I suppose there are no differences between Mics or Recorders."

Who presumed that?

"Of course not.
All a PLOT to take our money."

So who is taking whose money? In the context of over-using the presumption of placebo effect?

By the way, I watched the video..... I'm one who believes that bi-wiring does improve sonic performance in speakers that provide such facility.... And people have the right to discount that, and call it "placebo effect"..... (It might actually be the case.... But I would do it again if such decision were to come forth.) I wouldn't argue with someone about this, if people think it's not an improvement, it's their prerogative to pass it by and move on.

But I would also question his claim about the "science" behind bi-wiring.... The science here is inconclusive, the impedance would technically be the same, but there could be effects from the fact that the cables are passing only certain frequencies..... There could someday be a scientific finding that determines that passing certain frequencies but not others on a given wire can provide improved signal performance..... So I wouldn't put finality on this either way.... This is when science ceases being science and becomes dogma.
