With the exception of FedEx Ground and the USPS, I have had a checker experience with every freight carrier.

I did ultimately resolve a very expensive FedEx damage claim, but as has been your experience, it requires getting to someone at FedEx who has authority. I just kept asking to speak to their supervisor and when I got to her, she was helpful.
I recently had a FedEx claim where a cd player had its transport torn off the top mounting. Ultimately the local office paid to return it and the damage was minor.
Overseas, I have had good luck with UPS although I would never use them domestically.
