for the PT Too

Have had a PT LPT for years and was very VERY happy. Recently bought Pink's top spec TT from the 80's the PT Too and have not looked back.

My brother has an LP12 and the two deck are so different it's not true. The PT Too is arguably the most underated TT of ALL TIME!

It's design is so simple and was way ahead of it's time - acrylic platter, inverted bearing - DC motor with tacho drive - this is in the 80's!

The bearing is desinged so that the pivot point is very close to the point of contact of the stylus, and is an inherently stable design unlike the LP12. The bearing surface is a jewel (usually saphire) and these are prone to cracks, though chipped edges are OK. There was also a non-fragile converntional bearing as well I belive, problably becuase they didn't have any saphire to hand that week in the factory...

The subchassis is Aerolam - a honeycomb, aluminium alloy sandwich used in aerospace: a very stiif, light structure. Stiif and light is the key to the PT Too, wihtout arm it's very light to pick up.

The SC is suspended by hanging it from three springs as opposed to wobbling arround ontop of them as in the LP12. levelling is done by a clever mechanism that raises and lowers the sping attachement points. Set up is a breeze, using a simple wrench at the sides of the plinth to level the deck.

The only tricky thing is the arm cable which really should not be too thick or stiff as the SC is very compliant.

The motor is another work of simple logic. It's mounted so that any vibrations entering the platter do so in the direction perpendicular to the groove modualtions so pose minimal direct disturbance, and the PSU is external, in some versions it was battery powered too.

The result: one of the most neutral, dynamic and RIGHT sounding TTs ever! Coupled with other great equipment the results are outstanding. I currently have two PT Toos (one walnut, one black both bought very cheap s/h) and a PT one for spares since they are no longer in production. I can see no reason to change to another TT in the future.

Product Weakness: Bearings can crack, power supply and motor can fail with age. Sonically, none.
Product Strengths: Simple, stable setup, musical and very accurate.
