While playing the Rogers LS2 speakers I came to an interesting conclusion about loudspeakers in general – virtually all speakers have strengths. All speakers do something and in some cases many things really well. By this I mean there are moments in music where the speakers convey sounds to you in a way that really make you go, wow and you turn your head, so to speak.

The point I am making is really at the end of the day what we are all looking for are speakers and systems that make us really turn and take notice and allow one to be taken by the moment and hopefully those moments are more often then not. Although these little speakers will likely fill fewer of those moments for me that I aspire to hear, they do have certain moments that really take me there.

For example with certain piano passages, the LS2’s are really amazing. I don’t know what it is about them, but as soon as the piano comes in, it’s as if that player is in the room. That coming from these little speakers is a hard feat to pull off. It’s almost as if one can hear the hammer hitting the piano strings – it’s a beautiful thing when a speaker can pull off something like this and for that the Rogers LS2’s are great little speakers.

The other thing I realized with the Rogers was not to judge a speaker by its size – size is a subjective thing, but must also come with balance – the LS2’s are very well balanced. Their soundstage is a bit thin and they certainly don’t pump out heavy bass, but they image well and the midrange quality is very pleasing. They have a snap about them that is not often heard in speakers of this size or price range. Snare drum is another sound they like to deliver with panache.

Additionally the Rogers build quality it’s excellent – real wood matching veneers, a definite quality of builder-ship that one does not see always today – I have seen much more expensive speakers not as nicely finished as these. These are old school built British speakers.

In summing up, the best analogy I can find for these speakers is that I would rather take a chance on really good seats to a small live musical production than have expensive tickets and lousy seats to a really big production. The Rogers LS2’s make that little production worth hearing.
