Ok, I finally gave in. I've been eye-balling new preamps for a while. I narrowed it down to the joule-electra and the erato. I've been familiar with the joule for quite a while, but not with the Erato. I AM familiar with the Emotive Prima, the Erato's little brother-its OK. I went for the Erato. Good move.
This pre is clean, smooth and sweet sounding. This is NOT warm or euphonic. In many ways it is smilar to my type 10 SETs. It is both tonally neutral, and Harmonically lush. Detail is astounding. PRAT is good. The soundstage is wider than it is deep, but its not bothersome to me. The perspective is somewhat forward, giving the music an intimate and immediate feel. Imaging is outstanding. Timbre is spot on.
This is one Helluva musical preamp. Some of this may be due to the excellent build quality-hard wired, hand built, good parts with a 5R4 rectifier, 27 outputs and a 6BL7 cathode follower. I really believe, that much of the sound is due to the 27s. The sound far exceedes the price here.
While it may not be for everyone, this is a VERY musical preamp.
