Summary
If you're like me you don't have deep pockets to fund your Audio Addiction. That's why I'm here to tell you that, at $2500 list, the Belles 21A uses a hybrid tube and solid state design to deliver great bass, mid-range and highs, as well excellent detail, tonal balance and soundstage.
Comments
After buying my Merlin VSM-M speaker system, it became necessary to replace my BAT VK-30 preamplifier because it didn't have a tape monitor loop for the Bass Augmentation Module (BAM) that came with my speakers. I also needed a preamp with XLR outputs to mate with the inputs on my AES/Cary SixPac monoblocks. After consultation with Rich Brkich at Signature Sound, I decided to try the 21A because it had the functionality and price tag I was looking for.
If you're a tube roller the 21A uses just two 12AU7s, so knock yourself out. I'm presently using a pair of JAN 6189Ws affordably available at Triode Electronics.
To be honest, I don't know why the 21A doesn't get more attention. You can actually buy one for a lot less than more expensive and inferior used preamps. But I'll also admit the 21A isn't for everybody because its sound is highly analytical and unforgiving.
Conclusion
The Belles 21A has heightened my listening enjoyment more than I ever expected. At its price, I'd call it one of audio's best kept secrets.
