for the C 162
I recently purchased a NAD 162 Pre while trying to decide on a potential long term pre. My Bryston 3B SST and PSB Stratus Silver i speakers are keepers . Recent preamps used include the pre section of a Bryston B60, an ASL 2001 and the last version of the Bryston BP 20. I sold the BP 20 as I needed ( wanted ) remote etc. The recent very positive review in TAS of the NAD 162/272 combo got me thinking ( had also owned lots of NAD).
The NAD 162 ( used within the context of my system ) has been a pleasant surprise and more than a simple, it will do in the short term, pre. The most obvious difference between it and the BP 20 is a slight lack of transparency and less of a layered depth . Everything is there but doesn't have as much of its own space. The NAD though, has a rounder, more musical tone or weight that is very appealing. Of course a combination of these qualities would be nice but reqires a much larger expenditure than either of these models in my experience.I would consider the NAD superior to the ASL AQ 2001 or pre section of B60 in my system.
The NAD is an unbelievable bargain at its price. It has a remote, phono section and numerous hookup options. It will not please those enamored with speed, see through transparency and ultimate detail but is wonderfully musical ( in the best sense of the word ). It is the kind of component to try so that you can determine that spending 5 or 6 times as much is necessary to please your musical palate.
Product Weakness: slight lack of transparency , not enough space between instruments, won't impress audiophile friends Product Strengths: very good without being great in all areas.
