General Asylum: REVIEW: Pioneer DV-333 w/Dan Wright mods DVD Players by Chris

I recently had Dan Wright, an inmate here, modify my Pioneer DV-333 DVD player that I use as a transport. One of my concerns in sending my player out for modifications was that I would not be able to A-B it when I got it back. As it turns out, it didn't matter because the modifications produced major improvements in the sound quality that were immediately obvious. I have a modest system, and this was quite surprising. Playing stereo CD's, I noticed a much greater degree of air surrounding the instruments and the loss of a lot of digital grunge over the stock DV-333. I can now hear more of the information that is present on the disk. Imaging was improved to the degree that a couple of times I had to make sure that I did not have my center channel on! The treble is a bit smoother and the bass has more authority and much better tonal definition. Overall, everything sounds much cleaner and more detailed. The mods Dan made to the video also produced better saturated colors when watching DVD's. Here is the link to learn more about Dan's modifications:

As far as the rest of the player is concerned (the Pioneer part), it outputs a 24/96 bitstream which is nice. Not much software is available in this format, unfortunately. It's a nice budget player, especially for the money. The mods turn it into something that sounds like it costs a lot more money. Incidentally, doing business with Dan was a real joy. He emailed me several times with progress reports and returned the unit to me promptly. He was also very quick to reply to my email. No unwelcome surprises.
