After much time fooling around with a few DIY interconnects, I decided to purchase the Z 200 interconnect from Monster Cable. My objective was to do a prolonged side by side comparison of Chris Venhaus's, Jon Risch's and Monsters Z 200 interconnects. As a note, the reason I chose Monster was because of its "Time Correct" windings and the usage of multiple bandwidths. For openers, I burned in each cable for a minimum of fifty hours each. Listening sessions were not conducted until each cable had been burned in.
First impression: All of these cables were extremly revealing with a very low noise floor. Secondly, midrange palpability was incredible with the DIY from Chris Venhaus and the Monster. The DIY that Jon Risch promotes was a little too laid back in the midrange for me. Lastly, as for frequency response, only did the Monster shine. The bass depth that the Monster portrayed was stunning in comparison to the DIY's.
Ok, you ask about smoothness, transparency, soundstaging, roll off, imaging. Well, here it is. The Monster Z 200 is by far the clear winner in my book. It was much smoother than either of the DIY's I tried. Imaging was much more "pin point" in terms of accuracy. Sounstaging was also much deeper and focused.
In conclusion, I would just like to state that both of the DIY's used were made to the exacting specs of their respective "creators". I truly do feel that DIY's do have a purpose, and that is for cost savings. Please understand that I do respect all of the DIYers out there, however, they are certainly not the end all in sound reproduction. There a a few interconnects from other companies such as Tara and Linn that I also prefer over the DIY's. The Monster was the favorite though. DIY cables are great for those who are the hands on type or for those who may be on a budget, WHICH IS FINE! BUT, the above mentioned companies have done much more research and have much more abundant resources to draw from. Ego's aside, I urge those who are looking for a moderately priced interconnect, with so many great characteristics, to try it out. And, YES, I do know what you are thinking. You are wondering how dare I mention the words Monster and Cable in the same sentence. Well let me tell you, I do not work for this company. So put all of your audio "expertise" aside and try these interconnects out. You will be impressed as to how well these interconnects fare even compared to the MEGA BUCK interconnects out there.
