for the Bogdan ICS, Silver Eichmann Bullets

About six weeks ago I posted a review of the Bogdan silver ICs with the copper Eichmann Bullet plugs, which Ben then sold for $89.00 a pair. I was so impressed with them, I decided to go to the next (and at time final) level, Ben’s silver ICs with the silver Eichmann, which he currently sells through Audiogon as “Bogdan ICS, Silver Eichmann Bullets” for $169.00. He has since come out with the “Bogdan Silver Spirit Reference IC” at $269.00 which, unfortunately, I have not tried.

As good as the copper plug is, I found the silver plug a worthwhile extra expense.

The silver plug version is somewhat thicker than the copper version – I am not sure how much of that is due to the wire and how much to the teflon tubes they are threaded through.

I let them burn in with 24 hours of repeated CD, and then put in my silver disc of the Tacet recording of the Goldberg variations for string trio. The main difference I noted from the already satisfying coppers was breathing from the trio, interesting, but not necessarily an improvement! However, I wondered if the performance of the cable was being limited by the source, my redoubtable Art DI/O with upgraded Stancor power supply.

I decided this was true when I swapped them over to my Wright WPP100C phono pre (being fed by a Spacedeck, OL/incognito RB250 arm, DV20XH). Playing the Analogue Productions LP of Waltz for Debbie, the detail of the brushes on the cymbal was very remarkable. There was a sense of the texture of the metal. The same with the opening of the LA Four album (no other title), whose opening cut, “Dindi”, has a very striking triangle. I didn’t think it could get more palpable, but it did.

The sound stage, which had been very good with the coppers, became more solid and palpable with the silvers.

I then began to wonder if the silver cables and connectors were accentuating the treble at the expense of the bass. I spent a long time listening to Cowboy Junkies “Trinity Sessions”, which has some good bass from the drum, as well as from the bass guitar. I listened to both the vinyl and the CD, with both cables, and then with my old Mogami cables (easier to hook up to the DIO than the Equinox IIIs, which I probably should have listened to). I found the bass very articulate and clear with both Bogdans, whereas the Mogami simply had a dark character.

The very satisfying clarity of the bass was especially shown with my new double LP of the Ron Carter Quartet “Piccolo”. Carter plays the smaller “piccolo” stand up bass and Buster Williams plays a standard, very deep-bodied bass. Williams’ bass is very satisfying – the cables easily got “under it” and gave it shape.

So, in summary, I both the silver and copper Eichmann ICS provide a clear, balanced tonal spectrum. The silvers provide more detail, but are very musical and not fatiguing, and also provide a more focused and solid soundstage.

These ICS (both silver and copper) have probably been the most cost-effective upgrade my system has had.

Product Weakness: None, to my ears
Product Strengths: Very clear and detailed throughout audio spectrum. Satisfying treble and bass. Solid and focused sound stage
