The Walker Precision Motor Controls unit was reviewed in TAS, Issue 117.
I was not ever considering the purchase of this unit until I heard it through a Nottingham Analog Spacedeck at a local high end shop that was having a store-wide 30% discount. For $1,000.00 I thought I would give it a try:
The Power Motor Drive is a compact, free-standing component that sublimates the raw AC into pure stable 60 Hz to drive any AC turntable motor. It includes to toggle swithes in front,- on/off and a 33 rpm and 45
rpm switch. There is also a "fine-tuning" toggle switch on the side, next to a small heat-sink (you need a strobe light to fine-tune).
The TAS reviewer was using a Clearaudio Souther/Accurate TT system. His discription was, " lowered the noise floor on phono, expanded soundstage, firmed up Clearaudio's already excellent pitch stability".
I put it on my Rega Plannar-25/Clearaudio Aurum-beta S cart. system. My mouth dropped in amazement. It was every bit as described by the reviewer plus, more bloom and presence to the sound with much more solid and articulate bass.
I then moved it to my Roksan Xerexes/RB-900 arm/Exact cart. system. Frankly I didn't notice much difference. Could it be that Rega's really do have an inaccuracy in speed stability and a unit like this can vastly improve it?, while a TT with a good outboard power supply really doesn't need this?
Now to try it on my forthcoming Nottingham Analog Spacedeck, when it arrives.
