In case you’re not familiar with this product, it is supposed to “improve the audible and visible playback quality of all optical discs” and was “originally developed as an advanced optical resolution enhancement for the U.S. Military.” The kit itself consists of a pen to blacken the inside and outside edges of the optical disc, a special polishing gel and a big bunch of lint-free polishing cloths. Auric says you treat 10+ discs with each cloth, which seems pretty reasonable to me, and there are enough cloths and gel to do between 200-400 discs.

I found that the Auric Illuminator works as promised. At a cost of just $40 to treat up to 400 discs, it is cheap fun and strong voodoo. I consider the Illuminator to be an absolutely indispensible tweak that really does enhance the sound of most CDs far beyond its very modest price. The benefits on the Illuminator on LDs and DVDs is simply extraordinary, easily as good as upgrading to a better model player.

Final Rating:
Performance on CDs: 4-1/2 stars
Performance on DVDs and LDs: 5 stars
Value for Money: 5 stars
Fun Factor: 5 stars!
