You're right about the need for precision. If you use paper protractors it is imperative to make measurements to ensure accuracy. Conrad Hoffman has incorporated x/y axis adjustments into his program and I use an accurate engineering scale to confirm the necessary adjustments so the protractor I print is precise and accurate.
I think the bottom line is that each of us should use the protractor that gives us confidence. If you have to spend $800 to achieve the level of confidence you require, so be it. As for me, I can achieve the utmost in confidence from a paper protractor as long as I can make the necessary measurements to confirm its precision and accuracy.
